HÄLLBY OBSERVATORY UPPSALA

MARBLE WORKSHOP

Hällby Observatory is on the outskirts of Uppsala, an old university city 40 minutes north of Stockholm. It was a geodesic observatory but now houses our studios.
In the summer of 2017 there will be one sculpture course, starting on July 17, and one stone workshop, starting on July 24
The Observatory is situated on a hill with a beautiful view and we can have up to 10 people working with stone at the same time. Each one has their own workspace with air, electricity and shade from the sun.
Participants usually sculpt in the local marble from nearby Sala or in Carrara marble from Italy.
We have a large selection of tools. Pneumatic hammers and chisels, hand tools, electric grinders, safety equipment etc.

The Sculpture Course

July 17-22
A six-day course where we will go through the basics of stone carving. The participants will learn to use hammers and chisels by hand and then with pneumatic hammers. We will go through the stages of sculpting from the rough form to the finish with sanding and polishing.
We are two teachers to guide and help throughout the day.
Included is a block of marble from Sala, use of tools and safety equipment and lunch.
Cost: 5.700SEK = 600€

The Workshop

July 24-29
Here the participants work independently but of course we help each other when needed.
It is intended for those who have some experience already.
You bring your own tools but can rent them if you don’t have any. You can buy stone.
Cost: 1.800SEK = 190

THE ISLAND OF GOTLAND

STONE WORKSHOP

Gotland, the Legendary Island on the Baltic Sea. The starting point for Vikings travelling the long way to Constantinople.
The island where hundreds of gold and silver treasures are still buried under trees and boulders to hide them from the Danes’ and Russians’ pirates.
In the very southern tip of Gotland, in Hallbjans Nature Reserve, there is a “Magic Limestone Quarry” where tens of Artists “Got Stoned” by a material created by 400 million-year-old fossils.

The Workshop

This workshop is meant to be a “Sculpture Happening”, a symbol for the Artists’ “Repossession of a Pristine World”.
On the flat and soft floor of the stone quarry, on August 14, 2017, Global Stone Workshop starts a 2 weeks long OPEN Sculpture Workshop for 15 to 30 artists.
Artists can work with us for as many/ few days they want during the workshops’ activity period.
To pre-order their working period is desirable because GSW can arrange a maximum of 15 workplaces. Participants pay only for the days they are at the quarry.
The working spaces will keep a rather simple standard with (not a perfect) protection against rain and wind and a (good) connection to the power net… could be the opposite also.
The cost of the workshop will be around 200 SEK/day = 21Euro
Artists must bring their own tools. On the other hand there will be plenty of free stone at their disposal.

Accommodations

It’s high season in Gotland until the 31st of August and this requires early planning for both the Ferryboat and the accommodations.
Participants must find and book their own accommodations.
Unfortunately the Stone Factory 8 rooms are still not available,
